From Ancient times, awa has been considered one of the most important and appropriate offerings. It was considered a drink suitable for the gods, and its offering to important guests reflects the high status. The awa ceremony honors the deep origins of the Hawaiian tradition of awa by the recitation of traditional chants dedicated to Kane, one of the four major Hawaiian gods, a patron of awa, fresh water and healing. The apu, a coconut cup, is passed respectfully to each guests, who should consume the contents reverently, and may offer a brief statement. The awa is offered as a symbol of life, health, harmony and hospitality, establishing at its onset, the spirit of the festival.
